The Bangkok Metropolitan Administration has announced that its waste separation program has yielded positive results, with the city witnessing a notable decrease in waste volume and an increase in public compliance after the introduction of new waste collection fees. The program, known as "Ban Nyi Mai Ti Roam," aims to change the behaviors of residents in residential communities and small housing complexes.
According to figures released by the Bangkok Administration, the city produced an average of about 10,564 tons of waste daily before 2019. With the onset of the COVID-19 pandemic, this figure dropped to around 9,000 tons, before stabilizing at 9,560 tons in 2025 and 9,239 tons in 2026, reflecting an overall decrease of approximately 1,300 tons per day compared to pre-pandemic levels.
Details of the Initiative
Since October 1 of last year, new waste collection fees have been introduced to encourage waste separation at the source. Households that do not separate their waste face a monthly fee of 60 baht, compared to 20 baht previously. Meanwhile, households that participate in the program and correctly separate their waste into four categories - general waste, hazardous waste, recyclable materials, and organic waste - continue to pay the original fees.
Mr. Bornphum Vikitserith, an advisor to the Governor of Bangkok, described this system as reflecting fairness and encouraging participation. He stated, "Those who help reduce the burden on the system are rewarded, while those who do not contribute to separation bear higher disposal costs."
