A number of British MPs from the Green Party have urged Prime Minister Rishi Sunak's government to end the UK’s role in military support for the United States in its operations against Iran. The MPs sent a clear message demanding the government withdraw all permissions granted to the US for using British military bases in attacks on Iranian territory.
This call comes at a sensitive time as tensions between the US and Iran escalate, raising concerns about the potential outbreak of a large-scale military conflict. The MPs highlighted that continued British involvement undermines the United Kingdom's reputation as a proponent of peace and stability.
The Green Party MPs consider that the attacks carried out by the US and Israel on Iran are illegal, and the British government should take steps to protect human rights in the region. David Lammy, the party’s spokesperson on foreign affairs, asserted that the UK must not be complicit in armed conflicts that lack any legal justification.
The MPs also underscored the importance of diplomatic de-escalation with Iran, noting that sending the wrong signals by allowing British bases to be used in military attacks threatens the UK’s relationships with both Arab nations and Iran.
In this context, official criticisms are rising regarding the government's role in implementing foreign policies that could further destabilize the Middle East, reflecting an urgent need for comprehensive studies on the impacts of military cooperation on regional peace.
