E Ink Fridge Magnet Without Battery Works via NFC Chip

The use of E Ink displays has expanded to include digital photo frames, mobile phones, and even electronic price tags in stores. VidaBay has introduced its "Classic Plus NFC E‑Ink Fridge Magnet," a digital fridge magnet that mimics the shape of a Polaroid image and utilizes the same low-power colored E Ink displays used in electronic price tags.

The main feature of these devices is that they consume energy only when the image or text on the screen is changed; thus, VidaBay's small photo frames are designed without a battery. The update process relies entirely on the NFC chip's power in the user's phone when transferring images wirelessly through the VidaBay app. After displaying the new image on the screen, it remains visible indefinitely without needing a continuous power source.

These small digital frames are globally available through the VidaBay online store in white, red, and yellow colors, priced at $35.99 each (currently discounted to $29.99), or as a bundle of three units for $99.99 (currently discounted to $86.99).

There are significant limitations on color quality in this product. As noted by the Good E-Reader blog, the color display used is the E Ink Spectra 3100, primarily designed for commercial use, relying on only four color particles: black, yellow, red, and white. Therefore, the accuracy of color reproduction on the VidaBay magnet will be lower compared to other products using more advanced panels like E Ink Spectra 6, which can reproduce thousands of color shades.
