The Swedish Tourism Authority has announced the selection of German student Miriam Fiskeman as one of the winners of the international campaign "Your Swedish Island," granting her the opportunity to manage the small island of Marsten for an entire year. This island, measuring just 180 meters in length and 50 meters in width, is situated on Sweden's west coast and serves as a habitat for cormorants.
Miriam, aged 27, resides in the city of Halle in Saxony-Anhalt, eastern Germany. The campaign garnered significant interest, receiving 2,242 applications from 100 countries, with winners also hailing from Canada, the United States, the Netherlands, and Switzerland.
Event Details
In her statements, Fiskeman confirmed that there are no specific obligations tied to her new position, noting that the most important requirement is to respect the Swedish "Right of Public Access" law, which allows people to visit and traverse the island. Although she is not required to live on the island, she plans to visit it with a friend at the end of August or the beginning of September.
The island of Marsten is entirely composed of rocks, with no residential facilities, making access possible only via kayaks or paddleboards. It is located approximately 6 kilometers from the western coast of Sweden, within an archipelago close to a nature reserve.
Background & Context
Sweden is known for its abundance of islands, officially boasting 267,570 islands, the highest number in the world. The campaign launched by the Tourism Authority aims to promote tourism and attract visitors to the Swedish archipelago by offering them a unique opportunity to manage an island.
It is worth noting that this campaign is not the first of its kind, as other countries have previously launched similar initiatives to attract tourists, reflecting the importance of tourism as a source of national income.
Impact & Consequences
Miriam's experience presents an opportunity to raise awareness about the environment and nature, as she hopes to leverage this experience in preparing her bachelor's thesis. Additionally, this initiative may inspire more young people around the world to explore and engage with nature.
This campaign contributes to boosting tourism in Sweden, which could lead to an increase in visitor numbers and stimulate the local economy. It is expected that this experience will enhance awareness of the importance of preserving marine environments and islands.
Regional Significance
Although this event takes place in Sweden, it highlights the significance of environmental tourism worldwide. Arab countries could benefit from such experiences to enhance environmental tourism in their regions, especially given the presence of many stunning natural sites.
These initiatives could also inspire Arab youth to explore nature and participate in its preservation, thereby increasing environmental awareness in the region.
