The Qatari Ministry of Culture announced on Monday the launch of the 35th Doha International Book Fair, which will take place from May 14 to 23 at the Doha Exhibition and Convention Center. The fair will witness participation from over 36 countries, represented by approximately 515 publishers, distributed across 910 booths, in addition to several ministries and government institutions.

In a statement, Jassim Ahmed Al-Bouainain, Director of Libraries at the Ministry of Culture and Director of the fair, emphasized that holding the fair amid the exceptional circumstances in the region reflects Qatar's determination to uphold its cultural message. He noted that the American-Israeli war on Iran has significantly impacted the situation in the region, but this has not prevented Qatar from organizing this important cultural event.

Event Details

The Doha International Book Fair is considered one of the most prominent cultural events in the region, bringing together publishers, authors, and intellectuals from around the world. The fair aims to promote culture and knowledge, serving as a platform for exchanging ideas and opinions among participants. It also provides visitors with the opportunity to explore the latest literary and scientific publications.

This edition comes after the postponement of many major book fairs in the Gulf region due to recent events, increasing the significance of the Doha fair as a cultural event that embodies the spirit of challenge and resilience in the face of crises.

Background & Context

The Doha International Book Fair was established in 1972, initially overseen by the Qatari National Library. Since then, the fair has evolved into an annual event after being held biennially. Over the years, the fair has seen wide participation from various countries, contributing to its status as one of the most important cultural fairs in the Arab world.

It is noteworthy that the fair takes place at a sensitive time, as Gulf Arab countries face increasing security and political challenges, making it essential to promote culture and knowledge as a means to confront these challenges.

Impact & Consequences

The organization of the fair under current circumstances reflects the importance of culture as a means to overcome crises. Books, as Al-Bouainain stated, are a weapon that does not fail its owner, and reading is a bridge to a safer and more stable future. This approach reflects Qatar's vision in promoting education and culture as part of its national strategy.

The fair also represents an opportunity for publishers and creators to highlight their works, contributing to the support of the cultural industry in the region and enhancing opportunities for cooperation among Arab countries in this field.

Regional Significance

The Doha International Book Fair serves as a model for promoting culture in the Arab world, especially amid the difficult circumstances faced by some countries. The fair encourages cultural dialogue and enhances understanding among peoples, contributing to building bridges of communication between different cultures.

At the conclusion of the fair, participants and visitors are expected to leave with rich experiences and new ideas, reinforcing the importance of reading and culture in the lives of Arab communities.
