PT Bukit Asam Tbk (PTBA) has unveiled its plans to initiate a project that will convert coal into dimethyl ether (DME) in the Tanjung Enim area, located in South Sumatra. The project aims to kick off actual implementation, known as groundbreaking, in 2026, reflecting the company's commitment to developing alternative energy sources.
Torino Yulianto, the Director of Conversion and Diversification at PTBA, confirmed that the project has entered an advanced preparation phase, with most aspects related to financing and economic feasibility completed. He explained that the company has prepared all necessary requirements, including identifying potential technology partners.

The project aims to produce approximately 1.4 million tons of dimethyl ether annually, a compound used as an alternative to natural gas in various applications. PT Pertamina has been identified as the entity that will purchase the production, enhancing the project's chances of success in the market.
Torino also noted that the company has identified potential technology partners from countries such as China, South Korea, and Japan, with the partner being chosen based on the compatibility of technology with the characteristics of the coal produced by PTBA.
