The Indonesian Oil and Gas Regulatory Agency (BPH Migas) announced that residents of Tarakan, located in North Kalimantan, will be able to benefit from a reliable natural gas network, facilitating their preparations for Eid al-Adha 2026. A total of 34,145 household connections have been provided to access natural gas services through pipelines, reflecting the government's commitment to providing clean and sustainable energy to its citizens.
During a visit to the city, the head of the agency, Wheudy Ans, confirmed that the goal is to ensure the safety of energy supplies in Tarakan and its surrounding areas. He noted that the project serves as a model for other regions in Indonesia in implementing low-emission energy usage.
Event Details
The natural gas network in Tarakan was established in phases between 2010 and 2020, funded by the national budget. The gas used in this network comes from Medco E&P Tarakan and Pertamina EP Bunyu, with 0.3 billion British thermal units per day supplied by each company. The gas allocated for this program has been fully consumed, reflecting the project's success in meeting the residents' needs.
According to Wheudy, the use of natural gas will help reduce dependence on imported liquefied gas, contributing to lower costs for citizens. Additionally, locally produced energy will enhance the local economy by providing competitive prices.
Background & Context
Indonesia is one of the largest producers of natural gas in the world; however, many regions still rely on imported gas. In this context, the Indonesian government seeks to achieve energy independence by developing natural gas projects in remote areas. The Tarakan project is part of a broader strategy aimed at promoting clean energy usage and reducing carbon emissions.
Since 2010, several similar projects have been implemented across Indonesia, contributing to improving the living standards of residents by providing clean and affordable energy. These projects also reflect the government's commitment to achieving sustainable development goals.
Impact & Consequences
The natural gas project in Tarakan is expected to have positive effects on the local economy. It will help reduce energy costs, thereby increasing the purchasing power of residents. Furthermore, the continuous supply of natural gas will help improve the quality of life, especially during religious occasions such as Eid al-Adha.
Moreover, this project could encourage new investments in the energy sector, contributing to the creation of new job opportunities and enhancing economic growth in the region. The success of this project may also encourage the government to implement similar projects in other parts of the country.
Regional Significance
Indonesia's experience in developing natural gas projects serves as a model for many Arab countries seeking energy independence. Arab nations can benefit from this experience to develop similar projects that enhance the use of clean energy and reduce reliance on imported gas.
Furthermore, the promotion of natural gas usage in Indonesia may contribute to improving trade relations with gas-producing countries, opening new avenues for energy cooperation between Arab nations and Indonesia.
