A surgical and medical team from the Saudi Conjoined Twins Program began the separation process for Tanzanian conjoined twins, 'Nancy and Nice', who are 1 year and 6 months old, at King Abdullah Specialist Children's Hospital in King Abdulaziz Medical City, National Guard in Riyadh.
This operation is part of the directives from the Custodian of the Two Holy Mosques, King Salman bin Abdulaziz, and Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman. The twins were received in the Kingdom on January 27 after undergoing thorough examinations to assess their health condition.
Details of the Procedure
Dr. Abdullah Al-Rabeeah, General Supervisor of the King Salman Humanitarian Aid and Relief Center and head of the medical team, explained that examinations revealed that the twins are conjoined at the lower chest, abdomen, and pelvis, each having one lower limb while sharing a third malformed limb.
The examinations also indicated that they share the liver, large intestines, and rectum, in addition to the urinary and reproductive systems, with a malformation in their shared external reproductive system.
The operation is scheduled to occur in ten stages and is expected to last around 16 hours, involving 35 specialists, including consultants, nursing staff, and technical personnel from various fields, including anesthesia, pediatric surgery, and plastic surgery.
