The Mobile World Congress (MWC) held in Barcelona in March 2023 showcased the current and expected capabilities of "6G" networks. However, accessing these networks is still a long road ahead. According to a report from The Verge, it is likely that these networks will not be available for widespread use until 2030, noting that the development of the previous generation "5G" took about ten years.
The biggest challenge researchers and developers face is the lack of clarity regarding the details of "6G" technologies, as the initial design and future features are still being researched and developed within the International Telecommunication Union (ITU).
Nevertheless, scientists from China have revealed a prototype chip that achieved transmission speeds exceeding 100 gigabits per second, significantly outpacing fifth generation speeds, according to a report from the South China Morning Post. This achievement serves as evidence of the efforts being made to reach higher and more efficient speeds.
David Witkowski, a prominent member of the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers, anticipates that we are about four years away from the rollout of these networks to users. He notes that the new generation of technologies typically begins with the development of towers and infrastructure before reaching smart devices.
While Witkowski praises "5G"’s achievements in improving internet speeds, he expresses concerns that each generation carries new challenges.
