Manggala Agni teams from the Forest Fire Control Agency in Sumatra announced the successful completion of firefighting operations in five villages on Bengkalis Island after more than a week of intensive efforts. The fires have been completely extinguished, allowing the teams to transition to a new phase of operations.
In a statement, the head of the agency, Ferdian Krisnanto, confirmed that the last cooling operations took place in the village of Kalimantan Barat. He noted that weather conditions were favorable, with rain helping to alleviate the intensity of the fires. Helicopters were also used to drop water on the affected areas twice in one day.
Details of the Incident
The fires on Bengkalis Island lasted for over a week, destroying approximately 100 hectares of land. Three teams from the Sik operational area were deployed, along with a support team from Pekanbaru, to participate in the firefighting efforts. Indonesian Army and police forces also took part in the operations, both on land and from the air.
After extinguishing the fires, heavy equipment was directed to clean the canals and create water ponds in Kalimantan Barat village as part of future mitigation efforts. These ponds will help provide an alternative water source in case of future fires.
Background & Context
Forest fires in Indonesia are a recurring issue, causing significant environmental and economic damage. Part of these fires is attributed to unsustainable agricultural practices, where land is burned for clearing. This phenomenon has increased in recent years, exacerbating environmental conditions.
Bengkalis Island is considered one of the most affected areas by forest fires, experiencing numerous fires annually. These fires have led to deteriorating air quality and increased health risks for local populations.
Impact & Consequences
The firefighting efforts on Bengkalis Island represent a positive step towards protecting the local environment. However, challenges remain, as Indonesian authorities must implement more effective measures to prevent new fires. This requires improving agricultural practices and enhancing environmental awareness among the population.
Collaboration between government entities and local communities is crucial in addressing this phenomenon. Comprehensive strategies must be developed that include awareness and training on how to manage forest fires.
Regional Significance
Although forest fires in Indonesia may seem distant from the Arab region, their impact extends worldwide. Climate changes resulting from these fires affect the global environment, prompting Arab countries to take steps to preserve their environment.
Arab nations can benefit from Indonesian experiences in managing forest fires by developing effective strategies to address their specific environmental challenges.
The conclusion of firefighting operations on Bengkalis Island marks an important success, but it also highlights the urgent need to improve forest management strategies in Indonesia and around the world.
