The International Organization for Migration (IOM) has announced that more than 180 individuals are feared to have died or gone missing in repeated drowning incidents in the Mediterranean Sea since March 28. Statistics indicate that the number of deaths in this perilous waterway has reached around 990 since the start of 2026, marking one of the worst beginnings of the year since 2014.
According to the organization, approximately 765 individuals have died in the central Mediterranean alone, representing an increase of over 150% compared to the same period last year. In just the last ten days, five drowning incidents have occurred, resulting in the loss or death of 181 people.

In the latest incident, more than 80 migrants went missing when their boat capsized in the Mediterranean after departing from Tajoura in Libya, carrying around 120 individuals. The organization reported that the boat encountered rough waters before capsizing, and 32 survivors were rescued by a commercial vessel and a tugboat, later being transferred to Lampedusa by the Italian Coast Guard.
In a previous incident on April 1, 19 deceased migrants were found aboard a boat off Lampedusa, where 58 individuals, including women and children, were rescued, many of whom were in critical condition. Survivors reported that the boat had departed from Zuwara in Libya on the night of March 28-29, and after three days at sea, the boat became immobilized due to engine failure and lack of fuel and food, leading to the deaths of several victims before rescue operations commenced.
