The Sugar Producers Committee of the Food Industries Chamber discussed a range of supportive mechanisms to develop the sector and increase local production rates during an extensive meeting chaired by Mahmoud Fouda, with participation from several representatives of companies and factories operating in the industry.

The meeting reviewed the main challenges facing producers, particularly regarding financing, the provision of production requirements, and the impacts of climate change. Opportunities to maximize the utilization of available resources were also explored to enhance the sustainability of the sector and its role in achieving food security.

Event Details

Fouda clarified that the sugar industry in Egypt possesses strong components and significant production capabilities that qualify it to meet local market needs. He pointed out that the committee aims to enhance coordination and communication with the Ministries of Supply, Agriculture, and Industry to discuss challenges and propose practical suggestions that contribute to developing the production system and enhancing its sustainability.

The total sugar production in Egypt is expected to reach approximately 2.9 million tons by 2025, including 2.143 million tons from beet sugar and 750,000 tons from cane sugar, while local consumption is estimated at around 3.3 million tons, reflecting a self-sufficiency rate of 87.8%.

Background & Context

The sector includes about 18 sugar factories, comprising 8 factories for cane sugar production concentrated in Upper Egypt, and 8 factories for beet sugar production, in addition to two refining plants. This diversity reflects the available production capacity and growth potential in this vital sector.

The meeting discussed the importance of facilitating banking procedures, providing low-interest financing incentives, and enhancing the role of the Egyptian Agricultural Bank in supporting producers and farmers. It also addressed the necessity of ensuring the availability of imported seeds and studying the impacts of climate change on crop productivity and quality.

Impact & Consequences

The committee reviewed opportunities to maximize the utilization of by-products and unused factory waste, particularly clay waste. By economically repurposing these materials, they can be transformed from an environmental burden into an additional resource that supports soil quality improvement, especially in newly reclaimed lands.

These steps are essential not only for enhancing local production but also for achieving food security in Egypt, contributing to reducing reliance on imports and strengthening the country's ability to face economic challenges.

Regional Significance

The sugar industry is a vital sector in many Arab countries, playing an important role in achieving food security. Enhancing local production in Egypt can serve as a model for other Arab countries seeking self-sufficiency in this field.

In light of the climatic and economic challenges facing the region, improving productivity in this sector can contribute to enhancing economic and social stability.
