Mali's ruling military leader, Assimi Guaita, appeared on Tuesday in his first official engagement since the coordinated attacks carried out by militants days earlier. The meeting with Russian Ambassador Igor Grumiko came at a sensitive time following the escalation of violence in the country.
The attacks, executed by the group Jama'at Nasr al-Islam wal Muslimin, linked to al-Qaeda, targeted the main military base in Mali near Bamako Airport, resulting in the deaths of Mali's Defense Minister Sadio Kamara and 23 others, including civilians and military personnel.
