The Ministry of Hajj and Umrah in Central Sulawesi (Kemenag) has announced the readiness of 1,751 pilgrims from the region to embark on their journey to the holy lands to perform Hajj in May 2026. This was stated by the head of the ministry's office in Central Sulawesi, Mochlis Asing, who confirmed that all preparations have been completed at a rate of 100% before the start of the Hajj season.
Asing explained that all necessary documents, including visas, have been issued and printed, and they have been included in the pilgrims' passports. These documents are scheduled to be handed over to the pilgrims at the departure center before their departure.
Event Details
The journey will be divided into five groups, with pilgrims expected to arrive at the pilgrims' center on May 7, and they will be transported to the departure center in Balikpapan on May 8. Asing noted that the number of pilgrims this year has seen a slight decrease compared to last year, where the total number was 1,753 pilgrims, but 19 pilgrims were excluded and replaced with 17 others.
It is noteworthy that the pilgrims' center in Central Sulawesi can accommodate approximately 400 people, which is sufficient to host a single group of pilgrims consisting of around 360 individuals. Additionally, there are about 351 elderly pilgrims, representing about 20% of the total pilgrims, with the oldest being 93 years old.
Background & Context
The Hajj is one of the five pillars of Islam and attracts millions of Muslims from around the world annually. In recent years, Hajj journeys have faced multiple challenges, including health and political crises. However, the Ministry of Hajj and Umrah in Central Sulawesi is working to ensure the safety of the pilgrims and provide all necessary facilities for them to perform their rituals.
Historically, there have been many changes in the number of pilgrims allowed to travel, especially under changing global circumstances. Nevertheless, the Indonesian government continually strives to provide the best services for its pilgrims.
Impact & Consequences
The ongoing preparations for Hajj 2026 reflect the Indonesian government's commitment to providing a safe and comfortable experience for pilgrims. With growing concerns about geopolitical conditions in the Middle East, Asing confirmed that these circumstances will not affect travel plans, reflecting the stability of the security situation.
This journey is an opportunity to enhance cultural and religious ties between Muslims in Indonesia and the rest of the world, as pilgrims from various nationalities gather in one place to perform their religious rites.
Regional Significance
Indonesia is the largest Muslim-majority country by population, and thus the participation of its pilgrims in the Hajj season has a significant impact on relations between Indonesia and Arab countries. These journeys also promote religious tourism, benefiting the local economy in host countries.
In conclusion, the Hajj season represents an opportunity to strengthen bonds among Muslims and reflects ongoing efforts to ensure the safety and comfort of pilgrims. It is essential for pilgrims to prepare physically and mentally to perform their rituals in a state of tranquility.
