The Palestinian presidency warned today, Saturday, about the dangers resulting from the continuation of military operations in the Gaza Strip, alongside the escalating attacks by settlers in the West Bank, considering that these developments exacerbate the state of instability in the region.
Nabil Abu Rudeineh, the official spokesperson for the presidency, stated in a statement obtained by the German news agency that the continuation of current Israeli policies would keep regional conflicts futile, in the absence of a just and comprehensive solution to the Palestinian issue.
Details of the Situation
Abu Rudeineh reported that the humanitarian situation in the Gaza Strip is deteriorating, pointing out that 694 Palestinians have been killed since the announcement of the ceasefire, in addition to the restrictions imposed on the entry of humanitarian aid, which has exacerbated the humanitarian crisis, in violation of United Nations Security Council resolutions and related international efforts.
Regarding the West Bank, Abu Rudeineh noted a significant increase in settler attacks, indicating that these occur under the protection of the Israeli army, exploiting the existing tensions in the region. He affirmed that these developments would not achieve security for any party, reiterating that achieving stability requires a political solution based on international legitimacy, international law, and the Arab Peace Initiative.
Background & Context
These warnings come at a time when the West Bank is witnessing a serious escalation by the occupying forces, where the Israeli army killed 3 Palestinians in Ramallah and Bethlehem, in addition to the escalation of settler attacks that resulted in the deaths of 9 Palestinians recently. The Wall and Settlement Resistance Commission recorded 443 settler attacks within a single month, reflecting an unprecedented escalation in assaults.
The head of the commission, Muayad Shaaban, noted that the attacks have been characterized by escalation and organization, including direct gunfire, arson of homes and properties, and the imposition of new realities on the ground, in a context aimed at changing the geographical and demographic reality in the West Bank.
Impact & Consequences
These events confirm that the situation in the Palestinian territories is heading towards further deterioration, as Palestinians are subjected to more assaults and forced displacement, increasing their humanitarian suffering. The escalation of violence has led to the displacement of 58 families comprising 256 individuals, including 79 women and 166 children, due to settler attacks and threats.
In light of these conditions, the Palestinian presidency called on the international community, including the U.S. administration, to intervene to pressure Israel to halt military operations, ensure the ceasefire is upheld, allow humanitarian aid to enter, and put an end to settler attacks.
Regional Significance
The Palestinian issue is considered one of the most prominent issues affecting stability in the Arab region. The continuation of violence and Israeli assaults threatens to ignite new conflicts and increases polarization among Arab states. Furthermore, the lack of a just solution to the Palestinian issue reflects the failure of the international community to achieve peace, contributing to the exacerbation of humanitarian and political crises in the region.
In conclusion, hope remains pinned on the international community to play its role in pressuring Israel to end its assaults and achieve a just and comprehensive peace that guarantees the rights of Palestinians and ensures stability in the region.
