Israeli occupation forces executed extensive demolition operations today, Monday, in the occupied city of Jerusalem, affecting homes and streets in the Silwan neighborhood, located south of the Al-Aqsa Mosque. These operations are part of a plan aimed at erasing an entire neighborhood to benefit settlement associations and establish biblical gardens.
The demolitions coincided with the incursion of Israeli forces, supported by bulldozers from the occupation municipality, into the Bustan neighborhood of the town, where they closed off the main and secondary roads leading to it. Jerusalem journalist Bassem Zaidani, who lives in this threatened neighborhood, reported that four homes were demolished, including the homes of brothers Na'im and Ibrahim Shahada, the home of citizen Saleh Abu Shafi, and the home of elderly resident Ahmad Al-Abbasi (85 years old).
Details of the Incident
Zaidani added that the occupation machinery demolished a wall and carried out land leveling operations on citizens' lands, notifying three families to evacuate their homes by next Saturday in preparation for their demolition. The occupation authorities continue to pressure residents in the Bustan neighborhood with the aim of displacing them.
According to Fakhri Abu Diab, a member of the Committee for the Defense of Silwan Lands, the number of homes in the neighborhood was around 120 homes about a decade and a half ago, while the current number has decreased to 66 homes after the demolition of 54 of them until the end of February of last year, in addition to the demolitions that occurred today.
Abu Diab pointed out that 37 homes in the neighborhood have been demolished since the outbreak of the recent war on Gaza on October 7, 2023, reflecting the escalation of the Israeli assault on the neighborhood over the past two years.
Background & Context
The occupation authorities claim that the Bustan neighborhood was "King David's Garden," justifying their efforts to level its homes to expand the existing "national park" in the neighboring Wadi Hilwa neighborhood, which is managed by the settlement association Elad. The association has begun steps to annex the Bustan neighborhood, where demolition operations have escalated in the last two years, in addition to land confiscation orders.
As part of the confiscation, the occupation municipality issued notifications on January 1 and January 18 to several landowners in the Bustan neighborhood, informing them of its intention to confiscate about 7 dunams under the pretext of "landscaping and establishing parking lots" on lands described as "vacant," despite the fact that these are actually the lands of the neighborhood residents, where their homes once stood before being demolished by the occupation forces.
Impact & Consequences
These operations underscore the rising tensions in Jerusalem, where Palestinians suffer from the demolition and forced displacement policies implemented by the occupation authorities. Furthermore, these actions reflect the ongoing settlement expansion in Palestinian territories, complicating the conflict and negatively affecting prospects for peace in the region.
Concerns are growing that these policies will exacerbate the humanitarian situation in Jerusalem, where Palestinian residents face significant challenges in maintaining their homes and lands. Additionally, these events may lead to an escalation of protests and confrontations between Palestinians and occupation forces.
Regional Significance
These events are part of the ongoing Palestinian-Israeli conflict, which concerns all Arab countries. The demolition and displacement operations in Jerusalem reflect the continuation of Israeli violations, necessitating Arab and international action to support Palestinian rights.
As crises in the region increase, the Palestinian-Israeli conflict remains at the heart of Arab issues, requiring greater solidarity from Arab nations with the Palestinian people in facing these occupation policies.
