The Deputy Chief Minister of Sabah, Datuk Ewon Benedick, announced that the state government is close to finalizing the railway price review, alongside exploring the possibility of establishing a new route linking Putatan to Kota Kinabalu. These initiatives are part of the government's efforts to strengthen the public transport network and improve services for citizens.
Ewon, who also serves as the Minister of Industrial Development, Entrepreneurship, and Transport in Sabah, explained that the state railway administration is currently conducting two main studies: the price review and a feasibility study for the proposed route. He confirmed that the price review is approximately 90% complete and will be submitted to the ministry before being presented to the Cabinet for further discussion.
Event Details
Ewon indicated that he prefers to wait for the completion of both studies, particularly the price review which is nearing completion, before making any final decisions. The feasibility study for the proposed route from Putatan to the Kota Kinabalu Industrial Area and Sabanang Port is expected to take around 12 months, as part of a long-term plan to expand the railway network in Sabah and improve connectivity between industrial areas and major ports.
Additionally, Ewon mentioned that the Sabah railway administration is also contributing inputs for the feasibility study of the cross-Borneo railway project being implemented by the federal government. These projects reflect the government's commitment to enhancing transport infrastructure in the state.
